On May 6, 2005, Clifton Springs Grange #1042 presented a dictionary to each third grade student and teacher in the Midlakes Intermediate School. Representatives of Clifton Springs Grange visited each Grade 3 classroom to distribute the dictionaries and to discuss how dictionaries are used. Those helping with the distribution were Sharon Croucher, Bruce Croucher, Sandy Speers, Pinky Tiebout and Sam Holdforth. A total of 142 dictionaries were given out.<\/p>\n

This project, financed by Grange fundraising events, is part of the national \u201cWords for Thirds\u201d program developed by The Dictionary Project of Charleston, S.C. To date, Granges across the nation have donated over 100,000 dictionaries. The ideal of this program is to aid third grade teachers in their goal to see all their students leave at the end of the year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers.<\/p>\n

Clifton Springs Grange is a family oriented rural community organization that has been serving the area for 100 years. The Grange strives to enhance the lives of those living in rural areas through its legislative initiatives and outreach programs.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The 3rd Grade classes at the Plato Elementary School received a long distance surprise on Monday, January 21, 2008, when Ellen Wadsworth, a Plato resident and member of the Goshen Grange #121, West Chester , Pennsylvania , treated the classes to new dictionaries. The dictionaries were donated to Plato Elementary School as part of The Dictionary Project. Goshen Grange is a member of the Pennsylvania State Grange and is located in West Chester , Pennsylvania. The Grange is a family fraternal organization, originally founded in 1867 to provide assistance to farmers living in rural areas all across the nation. Today the Grange works in all areas of the country to promote community service, education, legislation and fellowship. The Dictionary Project began in 1992 to provide a dictionary to every third grade student in South Carolina and was so popular that in 1997 it expanded to reach every student in the United States . The Dictionary Project pairs with other organizations and individuals who sponsor a school or class and purchase dictionaries for that class. Since the beginning of the The Dictionary Project in 1992, over 1.25 million children across the United States have received dictionaries as a result of this tremendous program and its partnering with community organizations. Kuna Grange #59 in Kuna, Idaho provided over 400 dictionaries to the third graders in the Kuna School District this year. We also provided dictionaries to Falcon Ridge Charter School. This project was a joint<\/p>\n

effort sponsored by Kuna Grange, Kuna-Melba News (our weekly newspaper), Kuna Kiwanis, Ada County Pomona Grange #1, Highline-Star Grange # 429, Rob Morris #63 Order of Eastern Star, Brenda Blitman local CPA, and Marie Collins, an individual in our community.<\/p>\n

We received Thank You notes from all the classes and the teachers in each school.<\/p>\n

This was our initial venture with all of these groups. Several of the co-sponsors want to be a part of doing this for the 06-07 school year. We know our efforts were appreciated.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Following the National Grange wish, the members of Pleasant Hill Grange #101 in Washington State organized granges and five other organizations to provide a personal dictionary to every third grader in Cowlitz County including the private schools. This five year project is in its third year, and has received much recognition from teachers, students and the public. The Words for Thirds Program is such a great program, especially since many children who are learning have families who cannot afford dictionaries. Troutman Grange was thrilled to take part in this program and will continue to support it. Our Grange was also impressed about the contents of the dictionary used. It is not only easy to explore, but has extra information that sparks children’s interest, which is so impressive!<\/p>\n

The presentation went smoothly and was truly rewarding. The entire third grade at Troutman Elementary gathered in the school’s library for a brief explanation on the Grange and the presentation of the dictionaries. The students and teachers were truly thankful and excited for their new gifts. Not only did the kids have a great time, but our Grange did as well. We are looking forward to doing this again next year!<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

This was the fifth year South Sangerville and Valley teamed up for the dictionary project. As Lecturer of Valley (and resident \u201cham\u201d) I\u2019ve always had the honor of working out the presentation details and speaking to the kids. Last year Guilford Principal Julie Orton and I had the germ of an idea: we\u2019d have the kids make a field trip to the Grange Hall to get their dictionaries! Julie said she really wanted the kids to learn more about the Grange \u2013 it doesn\u2019t get much better than that.<\/p>\n

Valley Grangers are at least informally focusing on the kids because they are our hope. In another effort to deepen our relationship with the kids Community Service Chair Mary Annis is recruiting volunteers to help with our “reading to kids” effort. So Grangers will be visiting the school on a regular basis. Who knows? We might even be able to sneak some mail into the class mailboxes!<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Dictionary Project is a non-profit organization that raises money to buy dictionaries for third grade students in New Hampshire and throughout the country. Wingold Grange #308 is assisting with this project and has raised the money to buy dictionaries for all of the third grade students in the Brentwood, East Kingston, Kensington, Danville, Atkinson, Plaistow, Newton, Kingston, and South Hampton Elementary Schools. Although this was a five-year project, the East Kingston Grange continues to help students with this step in education. Since its implementation in 1995, over 18 million children have received dictionaries because thousands of people saw the same need in communities all over the United States.
