Next Tuesday, November 3<\/span>rd<\/span>, Americans will head to the polls to vote in an election unlike any other in recent memory. Or perhaps, it\u2019s more accurate to say that on November 3<\/span>rd<\/span> the election will come to a close, as 75 million Americans have already voted as of the writing of this piece, and millions more will vote by mail or early in-person ballot before election day. Either way, here is a brief rundown <\/span>on races to watch in <\/span>key rural Senate and House seats.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Senate:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The race to control the Senate hinges on many key rural and agricultural races. <\/span>Vulnerable incumbents in agriculture\/rural states include <\/span>A<\/span>griculture <\/span>C<\/span>ommittee members Joni Ernst<\/span> (IA) <\/span>and Kelly Loeffler <\/span>(GA)<\/span>, along with <\/span>Senators<\/span> from big rural states such as David Perdue<\/span> (GA)<\/span>, cousin of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, Steve <\/span>Daines<\/span> (MT), and Doug Jones (AL). As well, in the race for the open seat of retiring Agriculture Committee Chair Pat Roberts (KS)<\/span>, current House Agriculture Committee member Roger Marshall is favored.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

House:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

In the House many of the tightest races this year will come in agricultural\/rural districts. Most prominently, House Agriculture Committee Chair Collin Peterson (MN-7) is one of the most vulnerable members up for reelection this year as he runs as a democrat in a district President Trump carried by 31 points in 2016. Other vulnerable agriculture committee <\/span>member<\/span>s include <\/span>Democrats <\/span>Xochitl Torres Small (NM-2) and Anthony Brindisi (NY-22)<\/span>, and Republicans Jim Hagedorn (MN-1) and Rodney Davis (IL-13)<\/span>. Other close agriculture\/rural House races to watch on election night include CA-21, IA-1, <\/span>and <\/span>IA-2<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Free School Meals Continue<\/h3>\n

Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue\u00a0has authorized the extension of nationwide flexibilities to allow free meals for all children throughout the 2020-2021 school year\u00a0regardless of whether the students are physically in the classroom or learning remotely.\u00a0The meals will include both breakfast and lunch.\u00a0\u00a0The extension includes waivers which eliminate many regulatory hurdles and allows school nutrition staff to customize meal service to suit the specific needs of local school communities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Additional funding provided in the continuing appropriations law passed by Congress in late September made the extension possible.<\/p>\n

\u2018Swine Bomb\u2019 Warning<\/h3>\n

The nation\u2019s wild\u00a0hog population is\u00a0surging,\u00a0and\u00a0over 9 million\u00a0feral hogs have\u00a0now\u00a0invaded 35\u00a0states,\u00a0\u00a0warns\u00a0the USDA.\u00a0Texas has the most with over 2.5 million\u00a0hogs that destroy a third of the crops on some farms and ranches.\u00a0As an invasive species, they have been known to attack young cattle,\u00a0sheep\u00a0and goats.\u00a0Populations have grown even more dramatically over the past 6 months as\u00a0the coronavirus pandemic has kept hunters at home who normally are able to help control the feral population.<\/p>\n

Supreme Court Upholds Right to Farm<\/h3>\n

The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected a challenge to overturn Indiana\u2019s Right to Farm Act that claimed the Act violated the U. S. Constitution.\u00a0The court ruled that just because the defendant switched from growing crops to a confined animal feeding operation, that conversion did not constitute a \u201csignificant change\u201d under the Indiana statute.<\/p>\n

Oat Milk Popularity Surges<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0just been a few years since oat milk\u00a0first appeared on grocery shelves.\u00a0Now, oat milk is the second most popular plant-based milk, edging out soy milk, to claim its place behind almond milk which has 63% of the plant-based market.\u00a0\u00a0Oat\u00a0milk proponents say the product is high in protein and fiber, is allergy friendly, and ranks high on sustainability calculators because oats are not water intensive to grow.<\/p>\n

Impossible Foods Goal: Eliminate Animal Agriculture<\/h3>\n

Impossible Foods,\u00a0an investor-backed company deeply focused on creating plant-based food alternatives, is trying to hire top scientists to double the size of its research and development teams as it tries to end animal agriculture.\u00a0\u00a0Impossible\u2019s\u00a0next big innovation is\u00a0expected to be dairy-free\u00a0Impossible Milk that looks,\u00a0acts\u00a0and tastes just like cow\u2019s milk.\u00a0\u00a0The company also wants to tackle a more realistic steak and fish alternative to compete with Beyond Meat and other companies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

COVID-19 Vaccine Options<\/h3>\n

The National Grange filed comments October 15 with the FDA\u2019s Vaccines and\u00a0Related\u00a0Biological Products Advisory Committee\u00a0to urge the FDA to consider\u00a0any and all\u00a0COVID-19 vaccine delivery options.\u00a0The Grange suggested innovative options such as an oral vaccine in pill form should be pursued alongside the traditional injection format.\u00a0\u00a0For those from rural walks of life with limited access and formidable barriers, these innovative options will help assure a vulnerable population receives priority health and safety attention.\u00a0The Grange comments received wide coverage in national media as well as local,\u00a0rural\u00a0and agricultural media outlets.<\/p>\n

Vaccination Survey<\/h3>\n

Grange members across the country are currently participating in a survey to discover their comfort\u00a0level with\u00a0accepting a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available.\u00a0The survey also seeks to determine how likely\u00a0a pill option for all vaccines will be\u00a0utilized.<\/p>\n

Rural Versus Urban Death Rising<\/h3>\n

A recent Syracuse University\u00a0report shows mortality rates among working people living in rural areas compared to urban areas is widening.\u00a0\u00a0The report suggests the rural disadvantage is not limited to just\u00a0one or two specific causes of\u00a0death but\u00a0persists across multiple diseases and injury categories.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Increases in suicide, alcoholism, mental and behavioral disorders, diabetes, obesity, and respiratory diseases are major culprits.<\/p>\n

Cow Therapy<\/h3>\n

Europeans are rushing to embrace an alleged wellness fad: cow-hugging.\u00a0In these increasingly hectic and stressful times, people there are seeking calm wherever they can find it from frolicking through fields to adopting plants.\u00a0The latest fad to reduce\u00a0stress\u00a0is cow-hugging.\u00a0\u00a0According to the BBC, cows are chosen for their warm body temperatures and calm demeanor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Paper as\u00a0<\/b>Preferred Option<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Many Grange members prefer to receive bills, notices, statements and more on paper by mail rather than digitally. They don\u2019t want to be charged extra for the preferred paper option. The National Grange and the Keep Me Posted Coalition investigated how large corporations are addressing consumer needs and expectations. Recently the billing practices of the top 10 Fortune 500 telecommunications companies were evaluated to see how they align with KMP\u2019s best practices that include:<\/p>\n

  • No charge for paper bills<\/li>\n
  • Prior customer consent to cease paper documents<\/li>\n
  • No change in paper document frequency<\/li>\n
  • Ability to revert back to paper<\/li>\n
  • Continued access to online options<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Eight of the country\u2019s top 10 telecommunications companies embrace these best practices and put their customers\u2019 preference first. These are AT&T, Comcast, Charter\/Spectrum, T-Mobile, Century Link, Dish Network, Cox Communications and US Cellular.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Hybrid-Network Broadband Deployment<\/h3>\n

The National Grange and a large group of agricultural, rural, businesses and civic organizations filed comments in support of Federal Communications Commission plans to\u00a0update rules to allow the use of TV white space technology\u00a0to expand hybrid-network technology broadband systems.\u00a0Rule updates will allow higher transmit power, higher antennas for fixed devices in rural areas, and higher power mobile operations within geofenced areas.<\/p>\n

Rural Broadband Boost<\/h3>\n

Phase one auction of the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund began October 29.\u00a0The fund has $16 billion over 10 years provided by Congress available to broadband providers to offer broadband and voice services to unserved areas with download speeds of at least 25 megabits per second download and 3 megabits upload.\u00a0\u00a0RDOF requires providers to offer at least one voice and one broadband service meeting the relevant service requirements to all locations within the awarded area.\u00a0The National Grange has supported this initiative from the beginning.\u00a0National Grange president\u00a0Betsy Huber\u00a0told\u00a0several news outlets, \u201cAll of the publicity this year about the necessity of broadband has made Congress and the general public aware there are many areas in this country\u00a0that are\u00a0not connected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rural Hotspots<\/h3>\n

Statistics show over 18 million Americans lack high-speed internet, including 9 million K-12 students and 400,000 public school teachers.\u00a0Thankfully,\u00a0temporary Wi-Fi hot spots are spring up in rural\u00a0communities around\u00a0the country.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Look for these\u00a0at places like Land O\u2019Lakes facilities, Tractor Supply stores, rural electric coops, 4-H\u00a0buildings\u00a0and Grange halls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

A September poll\u00a0by the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget confirmed that Americans disagree on national goals and have markedly different views about the future direction of the country.\u00a0Democrats rank \u201cimproving health care affordability\u201d and \u201cimproving racial injustice\u201d as top priorities.\u00a0Republicans rank \u201chaving a strong and growing economy\u201d and \u201cputting America first\u201d as top national priority goals.\u00a0\u00a0Overall,\u00a0however, more than 80 percent of Americans hold such values as free speech, equal justice under the law, and ensuring\u00a0everyone has an opportunity to succeed as defining national values.\u00a0According to Michael.
