Burton Eller has a foot in two different Americas. One is in the rolling farmlands, pastures, and ranches, like the family cattle operation he grew up with and now owns. The other is in Washington, D.C., where Eller serves as Executive Director of Grange Advocacy at the National Grange, a voice for rural Americans when it comes to shaping policy and allocating for federal resources. Essentially, his job is to make sure his country neighbors have the resources they need.<\/p>\n

And Eller knows firsthand that, when it comes to health care, rural America has been largely left behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cRural America has been a little sicker, for various factors,\u201d says Eller. \u201cIt\u2019s getting older. There is a lack of health care and a lack of access to health care. And there is a lack of being able to pay for it once you get it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why the National Grange, a family and community organization dedicated to service, education, advocacy, and agricultural awareness since 1867, is working with federal, state, and local governments, industry partners like Pfizer, and the 1,500 local Grange chapters across the nation to improve the health of Americans living in rural areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hope and ultimate goal is that individuals in rural and geographically dispersed communities have access to\u00a0<\/span>equitable health care and a clear understanding of health-related issues,\u201d says Christine Hanson, director of U.S. <\/span>Public\u00a0Affairs\u00a0and\u00a0Policy\u00a0at\u00a0Pfizer,\u00a0who\u00a0works\u00a0with\u00a0Eller\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0National\u00a0Grange\u00a0on\u00a0to\u00a0support\u00a0the\u00a0organization\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>initiatives.\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0hope\u00a0to\u00a0empower\u00a0Americans\u00a0\u2013\u00a0no\u00a0matter\u00a0where\u00a0they\u00a0live\u00a0–\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0an\u00a0active\u00a0participant\u00a0in\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span>health\u00a0care.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ACCESS TO VACCINATIONS<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cImmunization is a big thing for National Grange,\u201d says Eller. \u201cThanks to companies like Pfizer, we had a COVID-<\/span>19\u00a0vaccine\u00a0within\u00a0months\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0outbreak\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0been\u00a0amazing\u00a0what\u00a0Biopharma\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0able\u00a0to\u00a0do.\u00a0But\u00a0rolling\u00a0<\/span>things\u00a0like\u00a0that\u00a0out\u00a0in\u00a0rural\u00a0America\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0a\u00a0struggle.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

For\u00a0instance,\u00a0local\u00a0community\u00a0chapters\u00a0of\u00a0National\u00a0Grange\u00a0are\u00a0trying\u00a0to\u00a0raise\u00a0awareness\u00a0and\u00a0education\u00a0about\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>vaccine\u00a0for\u00a0respiratory\u00a0syncytial\u00a0virus\u00a0(RSV)\u00a0that\u00a0was\u00a0recently\u00a0approved\u00a0by\u00a0the\u00a0Food\u00a0and\u00a0Drug\u00a0Administration.\u00a0<\/span>Eller,\u00a0a\u00a0lifelong\u00a0cattle\u00a0rancher,\u00a0says\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0tried\u00a0to\u00a0relate\u00a0to\u00a0rural\u00a0farmers\u00a0through\u00a0familiar\u00a0terms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur\u00a0members\u00a0try\u00a0to\u00a0explain\u00a0that\u00a0immunization\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0world\u00a0of\u00a0its\u00a0own,\u00a0outside\u00a0of\u00a0politics,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Eller.\u00a0\u201cIf\u00a0you\u00a0have\u00a0<\/span>pigs\u00a0out\u00a0back,\u00a0you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0just\u00a0inoculate\u00a0one\u00a0or\u00a0two,\u00a0you\u00a0have\u00a0to\u00a0vaccinate\u00a0all\u00a0of\u00a0them.\u00a0Same\u00a0with\u00a0cows.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0<\/span>tried\u00a0to\u00a0make\u00a0that\u00a0comparison.\u00a0And\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0worked.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even\u00a0away\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0farm,\u00a0the\u00a0National\u00a0Grange\u00a0has\u00a0worked\u00a0with\u00a0USAging,\u00a0the\u00a0national\u00a0association\u00a0representing\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0supporting\u00a0the\u00a0network\u00a0of\u00a0Area\u00a0Agencies\u00a0on\u00a0Aging,\u00a0to\u00a0set\u00a0up\u00a0vaccine\u00a0education\u00a0projects\u00a0in\u00a0rural\u00a0<\/span>communities.\u00a0For\u00a0instance,\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0recent\u00a02023\u00a0Eastern\u00a0States\u00a0Exposition,\u00a0New\u00a0England\u2019s\u00a0combined\u00a0\u201cstate\u00a0fair,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0National\u00a0Grange\u00a0hosted\u00a0a\u00a0tent\u00a0to\u00a0provide\u00a0vaccination\u00a0screenings,\u00a0education,\u00a0and\u00a0free\u00a0shots\u00a0to\u00a0many\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>1.6\u00a0million\u00a0rural\u00a0New\u00a0Englanders\u00a0who\u2019ll\u00a0visit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0could\u00a0never\u00a0have\u00a0dreamed\u00a0of\u00a0something\u00a0like\u00a0that,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Eller.\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0fact\u00a0that\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0able\u00a0to\u00a0do\u00a0that\u00a0is\u00a0because\u00a0<\/span>companies\u00a0like\u00a0Pfizer\u00a0have\u00a0stepped\u00a0up\u00a0and\u00a0helped.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

TELEMEDICINE & HIGH-SPEED INTERNET<\/h3>\n

According\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Department\u00a0of\u00a0Agriculture,\u00a022.3%\u00a0of\u00a0Americans\u00a0living\u00a0in\u00a0rural\u00a0areas\u00a0still\u00a0lack\u00a0access\u00a0to\u00a0fixed\u00a0<\/span>terrestrial\u00a0broadband\u00a0internet.\u00a0That\u00a0disconnect\u00a0hinders\u00a0those\u00a0residents\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0wide\u00a0variety\u00a0of\u00a0ways,\u00a0from\u00a0making\u00a0it\u00a0<\/span>harder\u00a0to\u00a0access\u00a0online\u00a0financial\u00a0tools\u00a0to\u00a0limiting\u00a0the\u00a0flow\u00a0of\u00a0reliable\u00a0information\u00a0to\u00a0inhibiting\u00a0their\u00a0ability\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>telecommute in an increasingly remote work environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0since\u00a0the\u00a0pandemic,\u00a0with\u00a0more\u00a0and\u00a0more\u00a0hospitals,\u00a0clinics,\u00a0and\u00a0specialists\u2019\u00a0offices\u00a0offering\u00a0telemedicine\u00a0as\u00a0an\u00a0option, access to high-peed internet is becoming necessary for rural healthcare access. Today more than ever, healthcare\u00a0providers\u00a0are\u00a0using\u00a0online\u00a0portals\u00a0for\u00a0everything\u00a0from\u00a0test\u00a0results\u00a0to\u00a0prescription\u00a0refills\u00a0to\u00a0making\u00a0and\u00a0canceling\u00a0appointments\u00a0to\u00a0bill\u00a0paying.\u00a0Physicians\u00a0and\u00a0their\u00a0assistants\u00a0are\u00a0also\u00a0using\u00a0videoconferencing\u00a0to\u00a0diagnose\u00a0certain\u00a0injuries\u00a0and\u00a0illnesses\u00a0and\u00a0direct\u00a0patients\u00a0on\u00a0how\u00a0to\u00a0respond.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Just\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0National\u00a0Grange\u00a0was\u00a0instrumental\u00a0in\u00a0getting\u00a0electricity\u00a0to\u00a0rural\u00a0Americans\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a01920s\u00a0and\u00a01930s,\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>organization\u00a0is\u00a0now\u00a0working\u00a0to\u00a0get\u00a0those\u00a0same\u00a0remote\u00a0areas\u00a0wired\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0digital\u00a0age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

PRIORITIZING\u00a0MENTAL\u00a0HEALTH<\/h3>\n
\n

Mental health is a vital issue throughout American society\u2014and during the pandemic, it became even more <\/span>important\u00a0in\u00a0rural\u00a0America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide rates have been consistently higher in rural <\/span>America than in urban areas, skyrocketing by 46% in non-metro areas between 2000 and 2020. Rates of <\/span>depression,\u00a0likewise,\u00a0are\u00a0rising\u00a0in\u00a0rural\u00a0areas.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The National Grange has partnered with Rural Minds, a nonprofit confronting mental health challenges in rural America, to develop a Rural Suicide Awareness and Prevention program that uses a grassroots, person-to person approach to providing information and resources. This also dovetails with the National Grange\u2019s efforts to provide broadband access to telemedicine through which rural Americans can better reach mental health experts and clinicians.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0one\u00a0underlying\u00a0challenge\u00a0to\u00a0bringing\u00a0more\u00a0mental\u00a0health\u00a0care\u00a0to\u00a0rural\u00a0America\u00a0is\u00a0battling\u00a0the\u00a0stigma\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>surrounds\u00a0the\u00a0subject\u00a0in\u00a0those\u00a0parts\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0country\u00a0where\u00a0people\u00a0still\u00a0worry\u00a0a\u00a0lot\u00a0about\u00a0what\u00a0their\u00a0neighbors\u00a0<\/span>might\u00a0think.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSome\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0stigma\u00a0is\u00a0getting\u00a0removed\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0time,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Eller.\u00a0\u201cPeople\u00a0in\u00a0rural\u00a0America\u00a0are\u00a0talking\u00a0about\u00a0<\/span>mental\u00a0health,\u00a0particularly\u00a0in\u00a0agriculture,\u00a0which\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0suffering\u00a0for\u00a0some\u00a0time.\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0turning\u00a0to\u00a0people\u00a0they\u00a0<\/span>trust.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
