Ask your Legislator to support PBM Reform

Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) were created as middlemen to reduce administrative costs for insurers, validate a patient’s eligibility, administer plan benefits, and negotiate costs between pharmacies and health plans. Over time, PBMs have been allowed to operate virtually unchecked as they consolidated to where three companies now control 80% of the prescription drug market. This hurts both the consumer – especially rural residents – and pharmacists, as middlemen are walking away with major profits.

In the recent Rural Minds / National Grange webinar “Improving Access to Medicines for People Living with Mental Illness,” Dr. Madelaine Feldman outlined how insurance coverage limits access and impacts patient out-of-pocket costs. She also explained how we change the status quo by advancing important PBM reforms that better serve patients.

We encourage you to reach out to your federal legislators to urge them to take access on Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) reform by the end of this legislative session.

Dear [Representative/Senator] [Name],

Hello, my name is [Your Name], a resident of [city/state]. I’m reaching out to express my concern about the urgent need for Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) reform. I hope you will support action on this issue before the end of this year’s legislative session.

PBMs are intermediaries that play a significant role in managing prescription drug benefits, but too often, their practices lead to higher drug prices for consumers and reduced access to affordable medications, particularly for rural communities like mine. As a person living in a rural area, I’m deeply committed to supporting policies that benefit rural America, where health care access is often limited.

Reforming PBMs would:

  • Improve transparency in how drug prices are set.
  • Ensure fair reimbursement practices for pharmacies, especially in rural areas.
  • Lower prescription drug costs for families and seniors.

I urge you to prioritize and support meaningful PBM reform legislation, such as [name the specific bill, if known]. We need reforms that increase transparency, protect patients, and support our local pharmacies before the end of this session.

Please help ensure that PBM reform becomes law this year. It’s vital for the health and economic well-being of rural communities like mine.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue. As your constituent, I look forward to hearing about your efforts on PBM reform. I hope you’ll keep our rural community in mind as this legislation moves forward.

Thank you again for your time.

Sincerely,
