Grange signs onto letter in favor of ‘common-sense’ amendment
On June 26, the National Grange along with 14 other agriculture and rural interest groups such sent a letter to Senators urging them to support a farm bill amendment to be offered by Senator Chuck Grassley that would place a per-farm cap on the commodity program benefits. The amendment also closes loopholes in current law that allows single farms to add large numbers of non-farm investors to a farming operation to qualify for numerous payment limits.
The co-signers said the amendment would “restore common-sense rules and fiscal integrity to the commodity program by placing a hard cap on the total commodity benefits per year for any one farm.”
Savings, the group said, would help to reduce the deficit while other parts of the amendment would raise the current level of funding for important rural and food assistance programs.
