Special delivery for 1,039 veterans

In an effort organized by 17-year-old Milton High School junior Lexi Gegare, many local residents have been able to do that with the initiative called “Holiday Mail for Heroes” through the American Red Cross.
“Holiday Mail for Heroes” allows anyone to sent a holiday card for military veterans, thanking them for their service, wishing them a happy holiday season or whatever that person feels obliged to say.
Gegare, who moved from Peshtigo to Janesville when she was about five years old, said she first heard about it on Facebook through connections at the National Grange, a “family, community organization with its roots in agriculture,” according to its website.
“I heard it from Pete Pompper … he is the national lecturer for the Grange,” Gegare said. “He sent out a big post and information and stuff like that and that’s when my mom saw it and she was like, ‘Hey, how would you like to do this? Get the Wisconsin Grange involved and all your friends and stuff.’”
